So much can change in a year...

Friday, 19 December 2008

Well, more like 11 months.

Hrm, you would think I was busy or something.

Monday, 8 December 2008

I guess this has just turned into a place to post stuff I can't post to the other place...

Like pictures of my child screaming at the mere thought of sitting in a stranger's lap. Scream-ing. I do believe we've hit some stranger anxiety...

Huge kudos to daycare for bringing the very very nice Santa in.  Definitely a pro, I almost felt a little bit of leftover belief in myself.   Maybe next year, right?

Ugh...

Saturday, 1 November 2008

Well, these are our only Halloween pictures, since we had a major blowout in her costume, down to the too cute socks, right after arriving for our surprise.  Which turned out to be not nearly as much fun as we had hope for.

We have reached our parental quota for perhaps the next two months.

But, here we are, bee and bee keeper, from my work.

Or not so much, seems blogger is being evil.  Will post to flickr instead.

Sorry about the test

Monday, 27 October 2008

Troubleshooting an internet issue, that I thought was Comcast being asses, and turned out to be faulty hardware.  I was trying to upload a new video to Flickr, for my mom.

Weekend before last we went to the LARK toy store in Kellog, including a stop in Red Wing that didn't involve the in-laws.  We went to one of the parks ajd played in when he was a kid and lamented the loss of some of his favorite equipment.  The video is from her first solo down a really really big slide that doesn't nearly have the safety features of newer ones.  It was fun.

The LARK toy store, not worth the drive unless you really have a thing for carousels.  You can get anything they have there at one of the many local specialty/green toy stores.

For Pusher

Sunday, 19 October 2008

Sprout already loved cheese, but she ate some super super smelly very strong blue cheese and all I could think of was how proud Pusher would be of her.

Oh, and how much I wasn't looking forward to sharing my cheese with someone else.

Wow, long time...

Sunday, 12 October 2008

Sorry, I've been busy with the writing.  Going through another down period, and I've been on call for work.  Ugh.

Sprout's Dr. apt was great, I started doubting the height measurement after holding up a pattern I wanted to make for her and it seemed long, so I measure again.  I think she's more like 34 3/4, not nearly three feet tall.  Still tall, just not quite so bad.  She get all skinny again with the last growth spurt, so some pants are now too loose, and others too short.

Syl's great advice on the JCP sale was heeded, and I got some more onesies that should hopefully (cross your fingers) fit through some of the cold weather.  I also got more of my favorite sweats for her.

I finished the blanket I gave away, and one I made for Sprout months ago that I finally weaved the ends on, I'll post a picture, but so far all that has been said about it is that it is bright.  I'm not sure what I'll start next, either a poncho for my favorite niece for Christmas, or something for the next baby on the way.  Still waiting on a gender on that one though (hint hint).   I also have a pattern over overalls for M that I think I'll try to get done sometime in the next few weeks.

Other than that, just keeping up with all of my writing commitments, and bracing myself for the fun that is holidays with family.  (score thus far drama 2 - me - 0 - One drama for each side of the family)

Cross posting because...

Monday, 29 September 2008

My favorite Indian restaurant is closing. Bombay 2 Deli in Northeast is closing. I haven't gone enough, I haven't eaten enough. I feel so bad about that. (though the owner swears it isn't for lack of business, it is more about the time they've had to put in and wanting to change their hours)

However, it is not all bad. After a few months off, they are opening downtown. Not that far away from where I work. I hear this upcoming Wednesday is their last day, so get your fix in fast. But come January they will be in the neighborhood of Kierans downtown. So close to me, I may eat there every day. Mmm... samosa chaat.

It just isn't fair

Saturday, 27 September 2008

I'm 31, I have black hair, and I have this much gray.

It just isn't fair.  and I've been in denial, but that picture proves it...

And ooo, cute kid picking apples too!  Just look at the cute kid, not the gray.

If they only came in my size.

Monday, 8 September 2008

They call it Steph. For some odd reason, I see that as fitting.

Good thing we have a lot in that color.

Thursday, 28 August 2008

Special thanks to sis-in-law to be for somehow knowing in advance what color of Crocs would be best.

She is now, offically, a Minnesotan.

Does anyone know

Tuesday, 5 August 2008

If you got ordained by the Universal Life Church, and you go to register with the county, if you need to wait after registration before you can perform ceremonies.

Cause uh, the wedding is next Monday, and I keep forgetting the paperwork.

Between the writing, the reading, the day job which is requiring night time work, and oh yeah, chasing the wild and crazy toddler around the house seventymillion times, I'm a little tired.

And that was before I agreed to help plan the wedding and keep the bride from kicking the grooms ass for suggesting that maybe she should wear something other than jeans and t-shirt.

She didn't, she is, and I got her to buy a new bra too.

Well, that was better

OMG, so far loving the new daycare.  Advantage here is that I don't have to worry about pissing someone off, but.

At the old daycare, kids would get dropped off and would freak out, and cry, and the teachers did NOTHING.

New daycare, similar aged kids, the teachers actively take part in what is happening with drop off and do everything to make sure the kids know it is OK, and that they are cared about, and respected.

Its about fucking respect.  They respect them, even though they may be a wee little 15 months, and treat them like they are valuable, independent people.  Not just a creature to be cared for, but a human being.

And they have male teachers, which I don't care what some may think, seeing male caregivers is good for kids.  There are still some of the same challenges and struggles with making sure that everything is covered, but what comes first is those kids, not bitching about how you don't have enough money.

Ok, rant done.

Keeping up

Sunday, 27 July 2008

The writing has been rough lately, but I promise, I'll post again soon.  In the mean time, I give you cuteness.  And the ripoff that is trying to find a swimsuit at the end of the year because she OUTGREW the one you bought at the beginning of summer.  Thank god I spend a lot at that nautical store and had some bucks back... (full swimsuit pics on flickr, follow the photo.  Trying something new)

New hair

Monday, 21 July 2008

I have new hair posted on other site. I'd cross post, but that's such a hassle.

Fine, over, you missed it.

Yes, I have two blogs...

Thursday, 10 July 2008

So, I've been holding out on this, but I can't do it any longer. The urge to do what I am told I shouldn't be doing is just too strong.

Last weekend saw the in-laws.  Had previously told MIL about my blogging gig, and how cool it was.  She goes into long rant about how she doesn't understand how anyone could say something bad about someone else in a blog, for the whole Internet to see, and it just wasn't appropriate.

Yeah, so talking about people behind their back, in a low whisper voice, like that makes it OK, is any better?

I may have snapped at her that I think expressing yourself online can have benefits (I was thinking of IF blogs I've read, people who are dealing with major issues in their lives), but that I didn't do that, I saw how it could be helpful.  That seemed to end things... and not in a nice happy way.

So, since it was eating at me a bunch, since I just had to know if maybe she'd seen my blog and seen that I expressed some frustration at her materialism, I asked her if she had started using the internet.  Since she had previously said that she refused to use it.

Nope, still not using the Interwebs.  Still refuses.

Huh.  Yeah, you know a lot about what blogs are and what people do on them.  And you never so much as gossip, nope, not at all.

A very special thanks

Wednesday, 2 July 2008

To Syl and Ms. Huis, who gave me great stuff to help me write my airport article for Savvy.  I could not have done it without them.

Watch the site tomorrow, I turned an REM song into a preschool activity.

Parenting is all about the poop...

Monday, 30 June 2008

Sorry to be so MIA, I've been focusing on driving traffic to the other blog (in an effort to drive traffic to the pay me blog, since eventually that will have an impact on my pay). Full disclosure, I now have a way to track my traffic, and all I can say is this.

1. Someone out there is really obsessed with updates, and it must be one of y'all. (who uses a Mac)
2. We all read each others blogs the same way. We visit one, then click around the links to the rest. Seriously, it cracks me up.
3. The other blog has two regular readers that aren't one of y'all, one from Chicago, and one from Michigan, and I have no idea who they are, but I'm flattered.

I'm going to be doing an actual honest to goodness contest that other place today or tomorrow. Enter, if you win, I promise its good stuff. (it is however a pay it forward contest, so if you do win, we'll have to figure something out)

In other news, Sprout has had diarrhea for like over a week, and I'm getting sick of it. Good news is she went up a size in diapers, so now they cost even more. Fun, huh? Ask me how I figured out she needed a larger size, really, ask me. You're gonna love the answer.

Dr. says it could go on for three weeks (last week they told me two, this week it was three) her diet consists of all Scandinavian approved foods. In other words, she's eating white food. Bananas, rice, potatoes, yogurt, cheese, toast, and anything else low fiber I can find. The only color she's allowed are carrots. I hope she doesn't lose her taste for green beans and broccoli.

Damn her and her big feet

Saturday, 21 June 2008

I bit the bullet and drove up to the Striderite outlet today.  Driving under or just at the speed limit the entire time (and no being the only one doing such).  Ok, I get it, I should have gone there all along (though seriously, the MooShu's are good shoes, and I think the squeaking helped).  I had gone to Shoe Zoo today, just to try again for sandals (hoping they had the mooshus), and nearly fainted at the thought of her wearing 85 (not kidding, nope, not at all) dollar sandals for the like two weeks her feet will be this size.  Especially considering that most of the snazzy expensive specialty footwear brands only come in whole sizes, and she's a "comfortable" six but a 7 is huge.

Now, granted, the selection wasn't as cute, no cute orange ones like these.  (going to look at their shoes again since they do a great wide toe box, but waiting for fall shoe purchase) And they certainly weren't as flexible as these, or these. (90 bucks for kids shoes?!?!)  But... They'll more than do.  I managed to walk out with these to wear now in a six and a half, and these, and these both in seven, since I'm sure we'll be there before you know it.

My only complaint, she really should be in stage 2's, but they stop at some silly small size.  As someone with enormous feet, I feel for her.  No one ever thinks of you, and if they do, its usually ugly.

Standing up for herself.

Thursday, 19 June 2008

I'm going to start calling them the magic shoes. Either they are working as intended, or the timing is just right. Either way, Sprout is actively reaching for a single hand to get help walking around the house, and standing up without assistance of a prop. I am thrilled that I may not have to delay start of the new daycare by very much. I'm also enjoying that this means she can wear skirts and dresses more (just in time for the weather to get warmer).

Daycare hasn't minded, and it would seem her new nickname is Squeaker.

Papa's day

Sunday, 15 June 2008

Global warming be damned, but this weekend was so awesome.  We went out both days, and had some cool adventures.  Went to Linden Hills and found my new favorite bookstore.  (write-up at that place I get paid for on Monday), we are so going back there a lot.  (part of my attempt to support local as much as possible)

We tried out the new Sonic in town, and I relived a little bit of my childhood trips to KS to visit Grandma.  (Cherry Limeade so worth it)

Today we went to Mickey's for breakfast, home for lunch and a nap, then out to buy shoes to try to convince Sprout to walk (and to protect toes when practicing walking - see post at blog connected to that site I get paid for), seriously funny shoes.   Oh, and she has enormous feet, but given her height, that shouldn't be a surprise.

Also talked Ajd into getting new glasses since he's had the current pair for FIVE years.  They are uber cool, y'all are just gonna have to see them.

Best part though, hanging in the back yard.

Launch

Wednesday, 11 June 2008

After posting to the void for like a week, I'm supposed to go live on Friday.  I'll send out the email when I know its for sure.

I found out some more stuff, guest posters have to be child development specialists, and local.  However, I think Ms. Huis even though she isn't local, could help me get the local angle on a slight fudge.  And I may have to interview akj about theater for the younger set.  Anyone else may not be able to guest per say, but I will definitely want your input on things to do, since your munchkins are are older than mine.  And no one needs to know who you are to do that.

Other than that, when it goes live, tell people about it if you feel like it, because traffic is good.

So, cross your fingers the techies get it right.

OMG with the busy

Monday, 9 June 2008

So, you may have heard, I got the job. She loved my samples, but we'll see what they think now that I had to spit out 20 articles in like six days. I have to post articles, but the site isn't ready for public comsumption yet, so I'll email it out when it is live.

Keeping up with things to do is not easy, so I'm trying to do something each weekend day. This last weekend it was the library, and butterflies at como zoo. I'm tired, so I thought I would have a nice week of work to recover.

Yeah, that was until I hit a deer with my car this morning heading home from dropping off the Sprout at daycare. Dinner plate sized dent, and now in the shop for three days (getting that accident from last summer fixed at the same time)

Also found out this morning that we should be able to get Sprout into a new daycare. However, she's behind where they have the kids in their center, so we need to do some catchup to get her in, since she would be in the toddler room. She needs to be walking (we're so close, and we have a month), feeding herself (as long as she doesn't need to use a spoon, we're good, otherwise we need to work on our aim a little) and drinking from an open cup (crap! We barely have mastered sippys, this should be fun, and really messy)

I knew our current center was pretty lazy about developmental milestones, but this kind of drives it home. Current center doesn't work on stuff, they just complain to me about where she's at, nevermind she spends more time with them than with me. The other center works with the kids on stuff, sets goals, etc. This would be why we are switching. I'm about to consider taking some time off from work to work with her on getting ready because I don't think current center will be any help.

So, that's it. Email will go out with info on new job soon, and in the meantime, I'll be busy working on some motor skills development and writing my ass off.

Audition

Tuesday, 3 June 2008

Auditioning for the role of VP of the US tonight, Ms. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Obama: What do you have prepared for us tonight, Ms. Clinton.

Hil: Oh nothing, just a little thing I like to call, concession.

Obama: Wonderful, lets hear it.

Hil: Fight! Fight! Fight! Mine! Mine! Mine!

Obama to self: Well, fuck.

Obama:  Thank you Ms. Clinton, that was wonderful.  You are so special.  I really hope you go one to do lots of special things.

Hil: Checkers!

Peanut gallery: Wow, bitter much? Give it up, maybe Chels will get it in another 20 years.

Crap

Ok, so I'm going to have to be more careful. At home I use different browsers for my different profiles (Safari & Firefox) but at work I only have one. Apparently, no more commenting at work. Apologies to the people I accidentally commented on with the wrong profile, I've deleted my comments. Feel free to delete entirely.

Updated

Friday, 30 May 2008

Update: This is what happens when you have little to no time to think about something. The more I read your comments, and thought about it, the more I realized that I like my (our) little corner of the Internet. I don't HAVE to link back to my blog, so depending on what happens, I won't link back. I won't put this alias out there. I'll keep this fun separate from the work. I'm looking for other ideas for an alias though. Everything I come up with is veggie related, and while I like the joke, maybe its not best for everyone to think I'm a vegetarian.

Privacy questions

Ok, so thus far I've been really having fun with having y'all as my blog readers. It's a really good way to keep up with all that is going on in our busy lives. Honestly, I wouldn't know half of what y'all got going on if we didn't all have blogs.

That being said, there is a serious part of me that wants to be Dooce when I grow up. I mean, really, her husband works for her. How cool is that? I don't really want the fired part, but the making money writing, taking pictures, being snarky would be fun. I haven't really pursued it, thinking that the best thing would be to just see what happens. I've done a few things to make myself more out there (leaving a link to my blog on a dooce comment was one), but I haven't actively sought it out.

However, I know a mommy blogger who does reviews. Yesterday, she referred me (with her permission) to a site that was looking for a mom in the TC. I've been contacted, have to write some sample entries, and will take the job if offered. After all, dressing the Sprout ain't cheap, little weed that she is.

So, here is the question I need your help with, since it involves all of you. I can link back to my own blog, and since this one has history, I will be linking back here. However, I want to respect everyone and I will remove the links to your blogs if you want. I will leave them as well if you want me to. I'm going to be taking off the links to Flickr, and I may create another profile to isolate myself from my "real" life.

We all use pseudonyms on our sites, but I'm leaving this up to you. Nothing is official yet, I still have to audition, but since if I get the job it will move fast, I want to know where everyone stands on this.

As a side note, if I do get this, I may need guest bloggers if I ever want a break, or people to do stuff with. Let me know if you're interested in that as well.

Maybe...

Thursday, 29 May 2008

I just got an email, about the possibility of getting paid to do something I do for fun.  I'm not sure how to react, but I have inquired about the possibility of what would come next.

Also, not sure if you saw it, but Christina from A Mommy Story (I know someone who gets paid to blog, I've worn her corset), left a great comment on my sunscreen post about someone who did an amazing roundup of just what the issues are.  Very very good stuff.  The link to Skin Deep was worth it alone.  In case you missed it, Crunchy Domestic Goddess.  You don't have to sign up for the Skin Deep email thing, you can click through.

Home, work, two hours a day

Saturday, 24 May 2008

Just for the record, this isn't meant to piss anyone off, and Ms. Huis's post was not the only factor in my irkedness (though being fair, it was part, but not in a personal kind of way, more of a general jealous way.  And it wasn't the only one that triggered it all).  For my own mental health, I think I need to write this one out.

I get two hours a work day with my daughter.  That is two hours that has to include feeding, cooking, sometimes work, getting ready for work, as well as trying to mentally stimulate and teach.  Seeing as she's not talking, not walking (yes I realize that it is normal, but I still compare) I can't help but think that maybe she would be doing some of the kinds of things other kids her age are doing if I could stay home with her.  Then there is the issue of the multiple ear infections (which no doubt being in a large daycare contributed to) and the resulting hearing loss and speech delay.  Given the choice, I would put up with any of the annoyances that I see so many women complaining about.  Really, in this world, you need too incomes, and being able to stay home is more of a luxury than many can afford.  I know it can be done, and with it comes sacrifices, but for those of us who work full time, its definitely a grass is greener issue.

It doesn't help that I find my daycare passable, not extraordinary.  And what parent doesn't want extraordinary for their child.  It doesn't help that I'm exhausted from 13 months of lack of sleep, or that I still do the majority of the house work.

If I get irked, and redo my blog, its not because its personal.  I'm jealous, and I worry.  I was an extraordinary kid, and I worry that my working is going to mean that my daughter is average.  And again, who doesn't want extraordinary for their kid.  I'm worry that I'll FUBAR her, or that making sure she's good will take a toll on me and mess up other stuff in the long term.

Sorry, I had to write it out, put it out there.  Its a big part of who I am right now.  At least once I week I try to figure out how to quit my job or have a panic about what we're screwing up.

Screened in

Friday, 23 May 2008

We're off to have one of our first outdoor adventures of the summer, and given my delicate skin, its been decided that the Sprout needs sunscreen.  So I, in my attempt to be informed, do some research.  Since I know that some sunscreens are ba-ad.

You want PABA free, non-chemical sunscreens.  You want the active ingredient to be a blocker, not a chemical that is absorbed.  Given her propensity for dry skin, and my history with fragrance, I figured mild smelling would be good as well.

Aveeno, my favorite mass market but isn't supposed to look mass market product would be a good place to start, since their soaps are mild and fragrance free.  No luck, full of the bad stuff.

So I settle on my other favorite baby brand, Burt's.  (I have a soft spot for bees and my dad's name)  Their stuff is good, and they go up to an SPF 30, which the info says should actually be more than enough.  (we're actually trying to avoid the sun, but since that isn't possible totally, 30 should handle things)  I go to my local co-op, being the good green girl that I try to be, and they are out.  While there I check out what else is available.  I am shocked by two things:

A surprising amount of available sunscreen has PABA in it, despite being labeled for kids.  This is contrary to multiple green and non green resources I've seen.  (wonder how many people blindly buy because its at the co-op and they think its been screened for bad stuff)

The available stuff that is PABA and chemical sun screen free is TWENTY-SEVEN dollars.  US dollars.  Not you know, Canadian dollars pre sucky economy.  For a relatively small tube.

That's it, still haven't found the Burt's stuff, but my favorite money pit carries it I believe.

Reorg

I'm feeling a bit... cranky today. Read something on a blog that really irked me, but I'm in no position to comment, so I've taken out my frustration on a blog redo. Got annoyed that I couldn't find a template that I liked that I could get to work. Realized that I have a huge number of artsy nature type photos, mostly from our honeymoon, that I am not using. I put one of them to good use with the assistance of Picnik, but I plan on rotating them, maybe monthly. It will also encourage me to use my iFruit for some fun, seeing as that is why I got it.

Also, I finally took advantage of Flickr allowing video and posted some stuff for my mom in CO. Its actually really nice, and doesn't have the lag that posting to some other video places does. Tres impressed.

Ketchup

Wednesday, 21 May 2008

The Sprout continues to be more vocal, and I hope that her follow-up on Friday shows what we think is true, that the fluid is gone and she can hear better.

I've done my shopping for summer for the Sprout and in the process have discovered a few moderately disturbing things.
1. She's as tall as Mini Me.
2. She's skinny. Despite going to the regular places, I've had an extremely hard time finding pants that fit her. I will be altering some things so that they fit her. She could keep wearing the smaller sized stuff that fits her waist, but she's so long bodied that it shimmys off her diaper when she's crawling.
3. Walking is coming soon, but it is not yet time to buy shoes. Got a pair of really flexible ones from Target, fit one week, did not fit the next. Thank goodness they accept returns with just the credit card you used to pay for it.

Other than that, the molars continue to come in, and with that comes intermitant sleep. We'll be good for a few days, and then it will all fall apart for a few. At least she's good natured during the day.

In non Sprout related news, my toe continues to heal, and I've given up on running any time soon, so I think I may do something I last did in NY, get a gym membership. With a 6:30 bedtime, I can go to the gym after she sleeps. ajd can handle any Nuk replacements that come up, and I can actually lose some of this weight.

Only slightly related, even though I am still nursing (a few times a day) I had to go get a real bra before I had a nervous breakdown about my sagging boobs. I feel human again. Casique is my friend, if they just made this style as a nursing bra, I'd be in heaven.

Speaking of nursing, I'm about to start lying when people ask me if I am still doing it. Apparently, I'm verging on gross and inappropriate now.

Oh, back to the toes. Since I was pregnant I've had a large, sometimes painful, very ugly wart on the non broken big toe. I was pregnant though, and couldn't actually see my feet enough to care. It was bad. So now that its summer, and a friend who won a gift certificate has said she won't go get a pedicure at Juut without me, I decided to do something. I'm putting prescription acid on it every night, and then cover it with, on Dr's orders, duct tape. My toes (damn thing spread right before I was going to have it dealt with) are so punk rock. Add the broken toe on the other foot and my chronically dry feet, and from the ankle down, I'm a mess.

Impressed

Friday, 9 May 2008

I have to quick give my glowing appreciation for the staff at CHC.  I can't imagine going through the rushed process of a primarily adult hospital with a 13 month old.

The other thing I just have to say is that I love our dr.  There is a very good chance we'll be doing this again, and he rocks.  (I'll give his name to anyone in the area who needs it)  At six tonight he called to see how she was doing and make sure that we didn't have any more questions.

Oh, and one more thing.  She really can hear much better.  Its amazing really, but swear she said dog and pointed to Tess.  Its going to be a fun weekend and a great mother's day.

Tubed

The surgery is done.  It started half an hour before it was supposed to (good that they had her stop eating/drinking at the times they did) and finished before the original start time.

Of course, she could still have issues, but now we can give her drops instead of shots or oral antibiotics that would make her more sick.  At the least, her hearing should be much improved already.

We're relieved, and waiting until she wakes up to start seeing just how much her hearing has improved.  Hopefully it won't make sleeping harder, since (knock on my own head) we've made huge progress on that front.

This little piggy...

Sunday, 4 May 2008

This little piggy broke off a corner of the lower of of the phalanges, this little piggy has a nice bruise next to it from the afore mentioned broken one...

I was totally serious about doing the couch to 5k program this summer, I was just waiting for the snow to stop... No really, I mean it. I figured that if I had made it three weeks I'd treat myself to a jogging stroller off of CL.

I would love to say I have a good reason for breaking my toe but no, there are rarely good reasons for broken toes. I am a klutz. You may have thought I was kidding about why the Sprout's middle name is Grace, but I really wasn't. It has everything to do with my wishing she could walk without running into doorways, couches, her own shoes, she had just taken off and managed to get her toes stuck in so she hyper extended her big toe under her foot and heard an audible snap...

I have been prescribed 3-4 weeks of rest, and given a booty thing that actually makes it feel worse and makes it harder to keep it immobilized. I'm not sure if I want another copay to see if I should be doing something else though, but the thought of it not healing well and causing long term issues is not pleasant.

Oh yeah, tubes - Updated

Wednesday, 30 April 2008

akj reminded me y'all need an update.

She has fluid, again.

Her hearing is borderline normal, the ear with fluid is obviously worse. Sitting there, with her on my lap, knowing she isn't hearing what I hear was really hard. Made me want to pinch her thigh or something.

Given the hearing, and the infections requiring massive amounts of antibiotics, there is no question she is having surgery. I am not so patiently waiting to hear from the scheduler about when. Update: Surgery next Friday, the 9th. So happy we don't have to wait too long.

We'll be doing it a CHC, so everyone she deals with will be used to dealing with children, which makes me feel so much better than doing it at a primarily adult hospital.

Wow, that moved quickly

I would be curious to know what eventually comes of this. I realize that in part they are responding to the major press recently, but what took so long. Not to mention, if the FDA did brush something under the rug because of industry pressure, and the Sprout goes through puberty early, who pays? (I mean who makes it up to me that she gets moody and teenagerish early)

And here's the even better question. Given all this, why are some people still using the crap? I got away from it as soon as a could, but the directory at my daycare, who is pregnant, is actually still considering using her old scratched up Avent bottles.

Misc Items

Sunday, 27 April 2008

1. pointless - walking on pretty lakeside nature path - and smoking.

2. Bad - employees of large baby/kid store chain (you know, the BRU one) smoking right outside of entrance. In air space of patrons and in sight of children visiting store with kids. Only thing worse would have been if it had been at parent store, TRU.
3. it could be worse - Our version of CIO (the check every five minutes, lay down, shush, rub head/back version) Only thing holding me together is chocolate ice cream. Note to self, get to store before tomorrow night.
4. It gets better, right? - Last night, hour and a half, tonight, hour and a half.
5. When you're tired, you're tired - Tonight, fell asleep, sitting up, in the corner of her crib, head facing into corning leaning into corner. Checked on her a little later than maybe I should have, after she fell asleep, and was able to move her without waking.
6. Hopeful - ENT appointment is tomorrow morning. Hoping that they agree that surgery is better than antibiotics resistance.

Toys and teeth... all kinds of freaking teeth.

Tuesday, 22 April 2008

The ENT appointment cannot come fast enough.  I feel like I need a giant ear voodoo doll to try and keep her from getting another one before then.  100 bucks in copays, and we still have made it to the appointment, or her 1 year checkup.  Thank god for my flex account, so much for the down payment on lasic this year...

To add the joy... we are getting in, if the matched sets (right left, not even talking up down) come in around the same time, six to eight teeth all at once.  We have top and bottom back (that's right, molars) right, and left just front of center, already through the gums.  And there is more on the way.... Gotta chew all of the meat right?

The toy part has nothing to do with the Sprout.  The weekend of her birthday, my present showed up.  Mother's day, birthday, flag day, all in one.  Ajd got me a fruity computer.  My old one was around 8 years old, and had already had everything upgradable upgraded.  It was time, and I decided to make the switch.  I deal enough with micro.sqaush at work, and I knew I had good support from Dude and akj.  Not to mention, I have no need... well, time, to play games anymore.  It also has fun stuff like a dvd burner, moving making software, and it plays so nice with the rest of my toys... Mmm... fruit...

Last Night

Wednesday, 16 April 2008

Last night, the Sprout screamed for what seemed like forever (including so bad she was coughing), woke up the moment I left the room, and still ended up sleeping with us, because the night before....

She woke up in the middle of the night and though perhaps she would go get herslef a glass of water... or something. Either way, she crawled off the bed (no damage done, except maybe to my sleep)

ajd and I are both sick, which does not make this an ideal time to do this, but it needs to be done, even if we are doing it late. Our fear is that it won't ever happen. So what do you do? How long do you let her cry? We can get her back to sleep, but she doesn't stay that way. She seems heart broken about the whole thing. In fact, this morning, I caught her trying to put a Nuk in a couple of stuffed animals mouths. Stuffed animals in her crib. Like she's trying to say, "so they leave you alone too? You poor thing, have something to suck on to make it better"

I need strength, I need advice, I need to know I won't be permanently be damaging her ability to trust.

One

Monday, 14 April 2008

Dear Sprout,

You're one. When did that happen?

I know you're on your way to starting school, dating, junior high, high school, college and maybe kids some day, but would you please slow down? I mean seriously, I can't keep up with the crawling, the opening cupboards, the climbing stairs (thanks mom), the talking?!?

I know I can't stop it, and I'm trying to enjoy it. It helps that you're so darn cute, so easy to deal with, even when you figured out how to shake your head no. At least I can still hang you by your toes until you giggle.

So anyways, happy Birthday kiddo. But lets slow down a bit before the next one.

-MaMa

So, some updates....

-For Sprout's first birthday, she got a doozy of a double ear infection. We were talked out of tubes before because it was almost spring. We are not letting that happen again.
- With the ear infection came something we had started to notice last time, but this time was disconcertingly pronounced. Hearing loss, almost complete hearing loss, and backsliding on language development. We noticed it a week ago Sunday, made an appointment for Wed with a Dr. we liked, and then fretted until then. Happily it has cleared up with the two (2!) shots of antibiotics. We have another follow up this Wednesday. The good news is that since her ears started clearing up, she seems to be hearing fine, and language is coming back. We even have some new things, like Mama, N's, and this morning, Down (which beats trying to hurl herself out of my lap)
- Found at the first ear infection apt last week, she's getting in molars.
- I didn't kill anyone at her birthday party, but I did find a side effect of mn passive aggressive. If you say the party should end "soon" meaning maybe in the next hour, everyone stands up and leaves. Unfortunately, this also gets rid of relatives you're enjoying seeing.
- There is great joy in realizing your kid didn't get a single electronic toy for their birthday.
- I love chubby little baby cheeks. I'm going to remind her how cute they were at every embarrassing moment I can.

Sprung

Friday, 4 April 2008

Its spring, the Sprout is almost 1, and my world is changing ways I wasn't entirely prepared for.

I had really gotten used to the things the Sprout was doing. I could meet her needs, and while I wanted to make sure that she kept up with her developmental milestones, I wasn't in any hurry for her to stop being my little baby.

Man I was in for a rude awakening. In the matter of a month she started crawling, giving up baby food, and nursing less. She also grew four more teeth, is actually biting things (fortunately none of them human or canine yet), and has started to really look like walking is going to happen sooner rather than later.

I wasn't ready for this! Soon, she's going to talk. She points to things, she tries to say things. I had the baby thing down, what do I do now? She's going to talk back to me, she's going to say no. Bedtime is going to become an even worse struggle (and right now, its bad) She's going to grow hair, and its already starting to curl. I'm going to have to brush it, and she's going to hate me for that. My baby is going to start school, become a teenager, and go to college... wah!

But hey, at least its spring. The buds are on the trees, and last night, we went for a walk.

(special thanks to Syl for the backpack. This is at least the third or fourth time we've used it)

Did you know I had a knitting blog?

Monday, 31 March 2008

Did you know I had a knitting blog? Yeah, I kind of forgot too...

I'm going to do my best to keep it up, since I've found that knitting again is good for my head.

Baby food, we don't need no stinkin' baby food.

Saturday, 29 March 2008

We are done with baby food in this house. I have brought in what we have left (which is a lot since I had just stocked up), to work for the other women who use the mother's room to have, since their kids are younger than Sprout.

Along with all of this real food, we have less nursing. I think we are finally starting the process of weaning.

So... how does this work? When did y'all do it? She is willing to use a sippy for water mixed with a very very small amount of juice, but not enough to get any really meaningful amount of liquid, so I would fear dehydration.

Also, anyone willing to answer when they totally gave it up?

You know, that plastic stuff we all remember from when we were kids...

Tuesday, 25 March 2008

... If I were to say, do a T.uppe.rware party, would anyone be interested? I was thinking of getting some of those freeze pop things, and some smaller storage thing. Maybe think a little more about what I get for the multitudes of Sprout things, and setup my kitchen a little better.

Any takers?

*PS. The stuff I really want, the classic looking bowls and stuff, is only available as hostess stuff. Which is why I am interested in hosting, not just buying online...

Three out of four

Monday, 17 March 2008

We have three of the four top teeth through her gums.

This last one is giving us trouble.

I miss sleep.

God bless acetaminophen.

11 months!?

Wednesday, 12 March 2008

That's like 1 month away from a whole year.

We have two new teeth in the past week, and two more right behind.

We have eating of broccoli!, and other not in mush form veggies (green beans, peas, carrots, you know, mixed veggies) All overcooked to a level I would never eat, but still, she isn't hating them and is actively searching out the broccoli.

We have use of a sippy cup. Apparently today was the day she got it. I found a sippy similar to the Nuby one, but smaller (The nuby one seemed to big for her to grasp and tip). Thanks to zRecs, I know its OK in the plastics world.

We went to bed all on our own last night, and tonight we are fighting it, but since she's not actively screaming, just whining and being cranky pants, I'm attempting to see how long I last. She could go all night, stubborn thing.

Housekeeping randomness

Monday, 10 March 2008

Week before last, I worked 64 hours. Last week I worked 47.5 hours. I'm a bit toasty, but I'm itching to blog. This post is just a laundry list of things I've been meaning to post.

My friend Kristen, who I've been a very bad friend to since having the Sprout, lost her mom last month to a long fight with breast cancer. I met her mom once, at her wedding. She had been going through chemo at the time, and made some really good jokes about her wig. I have huge respect for anyone who can be going through something so horrible and still have a sense of humor. I'm bummed I didn't get to know her better, I don't think I'll be able to see a short red haircut without thinking of her wig. I've wanted to do the breast cancer walk since I lost my great aunt, and maybe this will be the year. With a red wig, of course.

The Sprout is a crawling machine. I don't know what I was wishing for, but she now chases the dog, and tries to push up on her toes. I fear walking, but I'm still looking forward to it. I've already started looking online for better shoes since I suspect walking will come at the same time as mud, and we'll need something better than leather booties for any outdoor adventures.

Speaking of a walking Sprout, I'm struggling with how to deal with my neighbors. Here is the run down.

- They are not good dog owners. Their one has socialization issues and has tried to attack Tess. They are left to roam their back yard, they dig under the fence, and the one can get up on their garage roof and could easily jump into our yard if we didn't have a tree in the way.
- Since the tree came down last year, we've been plugging the holes they dig with pieces of wood.
- We need to remove the wood because its not safe for the kid, oddly enough, neither are the holes or their dogs being in our yard.
- We need to remove the remaining tree because of a larger drainage issue, not to mention I want a damn garden.

So now I'm stuck with how to keep my yard and family safe, while dealing with their piss poor pet ownership. Just to make things more interesting, she works for the city, in the department where I would have to report her. Oh, and there is the whole parking thing. They have, as of this morning four vehicles parked in front. They have one parking space in front of their house... you do the math.

Among the many things that I love about my husband and my life, I got some great friends as part of the deal. This last weekend was a blast and exactly the relaxing diversion I needed. Seeing Syl's spawn was hilarious. They are adorable. Not to mention, getting to see Attilla was great. She's growing up so fast.

Seven! The story of my life.

Thursday, 6 March 2008

So, I'm playing along too. You can see what I mean here.

Here is the interesting thing. Its one of my favorite numbers. My birthday has a lot of them in there, so does my SSN, and a variety of other numbers that are important to me. And it all plays well into cribbage, one of my favorite games.

you chose AX - your Enneagram type is SEVEN (aka "The Enthusiast").

"I am happy and open to new things"

Adventurers are energetic, lively, and optimistic. They want to contribute to the world.

How to Get Along with Me

Give me companionship, affection, and freedom.
Engage with me in stimulating conversation and laughter.
Appreciate my grand visions and listen to my stories. Especially when I tell them over and over again.
Don't try to change my style. Accept me the way I am.
Be responsible for youself. I dislike clingy or needy people.
Don't tell me what to do.
What I Like About Being a SEVEN

being optimistic and not letting life's troubles get me down
being spontaneous and free-spirited
being outspoken and outrageous. It's part of the fun.
being generous and trying to make the world a better place
having the guts to take risks and to try exciting adventures This one isn't always easy, but I always feel better after I do it. Ask me about my first phone call home from Europe some time...
having such varied interests and abilities Knitting, computers and wood working anyone?

What's Hard About Being a SEVEN

not having enough time to do all the things I want
not completing things I start Who me?
not being able to profit from the benefits that come from specializing; not making a commitment to a career I force myself to do this one because of comittments, but I'm more like my dad than I care to admit to.
having a tendency to be ungrounded; getting lost in plans or fantasies
feeling confined when I'm in a one-to-one relationship Just for the record, I disagree here, or I wouldn't be married.

SEVENs as Children Often

are action oriented and adventuresome
drum up excitement
prefer being with other children to being alone
finesse their way around adults
dream of the freedom they'll have when they grow up

SEVENs as Parents

are often enthusiastic and generous
want their children to be exposed to many adventures in life Hell ya! I'm planning to shove her into all kinds of cool things.
may be too busy with their own activities to be attentive I disagree here, but I guess if you count the fact that I have a full time job, maybe.

Question and answer.

Wednesday, 27 February 2008

Q - What is worse than an ear infection?
A - 4 in 7 months.

Q - And whats worse than that?
A - When the oral antibiotics don't clear them up anymore, they just make you sick and lose your appetite.

Q - And worse than that?
A - A shot of antibiotics.

Q - And worse than that?
A - Three shots.

Q - And worse, but maybe better?
A - Likely getting ear tubes.

Q - Change of subject, sort of. How do you know its a really bad cold/flu season?
A - When the drug store is out of/almost out of every variety of the Quil (and similar things), Airborn, nasal spray, and tissues with lotion.

Yeah so, after puking up the drugs a few times, and still playin grab the ear, we brought her back in tonight (I am so sick of being puked on). Ear is still pussy, drugs don't do a darn thing but make her sick (which seriously, on top of iron and GERD is no fun), so shot got a shot, goes back for two more, and we will most likely get a referral for SURGERY. My baby might get cut! (but oh to give up the ear infections....)

Oh, and one other thing... I thought breastfeeding was suposed to mean no ear infections. I was robbed! ;)

Pre Preg Jeans and other fun stuff

Sunday, 24 February 2008

Since the jeans I bought after having the Sprout have gotten ummm... really loose is an understatement, I decided to try on some stuff from pre preg. You know, open that drawer. After three tries, I found one that fits, well. I've changed shape, so I didn't expect everything to fit, and there are at least two different sizes in there (pre preg and pre fat ass). Who cares how many pairs it took, they fit! And they are way more comfy, and I don't have to keep trying to pull up my pants all day long.

I weighed myself too, within three pounds, which is just a few glasses of water, right?

Yeah, that whole tummy off the floor 60% of the time. That is a thing of the past. All it took was another ear infection (yeah, fuck would be the right response to that), and a few days of serious napping.

Well, tilt your head left. (I keep forgetting you can't just rotate video)

Tilt your head left from Kale on Vimeo.
There is my girl. Crawling her darndest for Puffs. (and later dog toys, no I was not playing fetch with my child... just Go, no fetch) She would NOT go to bed when she was suposed to, so we were trying to do the equivalent of running laps around the block to wear her out. It worked, sort of.

Babyproofable

Tuesday, 19 February 2008

Yeah, good thing the house is small, because I'm pretty sure we couldn't baby proof it if we tried. Every room has some climable, toppleable thing in it. Even her room is full of hazards, from her changing table to the glider.
To really drive it home, she has become bored with simply sitting on the couch and playing with toys while we work/watch TV/read. I've had to take my book/knitting into her room and sit in/guard the glider while she tried to find every spec of lint on the floor. (good to start cleaning habbits early)
The dog is taking it as well as can be expected. Now that she is crawling with her belly off the floor (at least 60% of the time and oh yeah, and pulling up on everything), the dog isn't sure if she should play, or run for her life. Sprout almost tried to chase the dog, and I think if she hadn't just been outside, she would have shit her pants. (the dog, Sprout does that all the time) It was a priceless canine expression of sheer terror.

If you want to see my terror, see the Flickr pictures...

Movin' and Groovin'

Monday, 11 February 2008

Since the Sprout is moving more and more all the time, we took advantage of the weekend to install some better gates. No more cheap plastic ones rested against doors, there soley to keep the dog out/in. In addition to the nifty top of the stairs gate we had already installed, we have one at the bottom of the stairs going up to the second floor, and one to the entrance to her room.

In a great bit of irony, she nose dived off the couch while we were working on the baby proofing.

I may need the worst mother of the year award, since I was right there not more than a few feet from her when it happened.

In other good news, she's back up to pre-sick weight, and is chowing down every chance she gets. In fact, today, she tried to take a bite of my nipple. Little canibal.

Gush...

Thursday, 7 February 2008

Forgive the momness of this.

I saw her scoot! For a stinkin' puff! Ajd got her to do it before I got home, after he saw her lustily eyeing his trailmix. He put out three puffs, she scooted on her tummy. (commando crawl like) And then she did it for me, ate her puff, and scooted the rest of the way too me. She was cranky about doing it, but I'm sure when she figures out her new power, there will be less cranking and more gettin' in trouble.

There's no stopping her now...

Enough of the politics bullshit, lets get back to the kid stuff.

The Sprout is, I can safely say, other than a stuffy nose (welcome to the family), recovered. (oh yeah, there is that iron problem, but more on that later) She's eating good, sleeping good, and well, movin'.

I used to be able to set her down and maybe she would lean over to get a toy. If we were in her room, she'd scoot around and go for stuff but its only like a three foot square area. This morning, I sat her down at daycare while I put her bottles away, and she scooted off to play with something next to the mat. On her sheets at daycare, they say she scooted from the mat, to the door. Thats like 5 feet! Thats the open space in most of our rooms! Time to go get better gates.

In addition to the scooting, we're having an adventure with the iron suplements. Being a um... very regular person, I'm not used to having to deal with what to do if you're not so regular. So, we started feeding her prunes (pureed with other stuff). Apparently, she doesn't need them every day, in addition to the rest of her strictly fruit diet, because we had the opposite problem yesterday. Since we're on the fruit and iron diet (Vit. C helps with absorption) for the next month, we're going to have to figure out how to keep her... consistant, but not too consistant.

Caucussing - Part Two

Tuesday, 5 February 2008

Yeah, so, never seen turnout like this before.

And my dear darling Dems, they lack organization skills, paper, and a sharpie.

Me to guy I know from the bus: yeah, you guys need better organization. And signs.

Him: You know how many people usually show up for this. 40.

*yeah, there were like two hundred there, and the line was out the door*

They were expecting to not even START the actual caucus until 8. Since I had to feed the Sprout, I left. I would have almost liked to have stayed and nominated myself to help be party leadership, because I know to bring paper and sharpies, but you that would just be living up to my parents expectations.

I'm still a little bitchy about the whole organization/preparedness thing. Here is why. Party brass must have their heads up their ass, because how could you not know how popular this election is going to be, and how well the cantidates (one in particular, hello he filled T*rget Center) had done to get people passionate about things for the first time in a long time. Not to mention, high minority neighborhood, and they have more at stake than ever before and really feel that the process has something for them. I mean really, who doesn't bring paper, sharpies, and I forgot the last thing, tape, to any major people event.

I'm almost tempted to go back and run for something on a platform of paper, tape and goddamn sharpies.

Caucussing

Monday, 4 February 2008

*puts down soapbox*

Ok, so I feel the need to express myself politically. Can't help it, it was bred into me. It was also shoved down my throat repeatedly. Which is why I have nightmares about caucuses. I hate them. I hate the party brass stroking themselves and the rabble rousers making trouble, and everyone talking about how awesome their party is and how they're gonna change the world. (lots of reason to rebel as a downtrodden DFL farmer in the 80's)

I'm sure my big metro caucuses are going to be much better, but I'm afraid to go. I know I can walk in and vote for person I like and leave, but that means I can't vote for Stuart Smalley. And seriously, I think he'd do a good job. We need more cyni... I mean satirists in the Senate. There is also the issue of my needing to breastfeed at the event (I realize its odd to be worried about breastfeeding at a liberal thing, but I've got shy nipples and a curious kid). However, I can help make history. I really want to support the chance at the first female Prez ever (everyone else is doing it, why can't we. I mean really India, England... we suck), but I'm voting for the other guy... here comes the soapbox part, warned you didn't I... because for two thirds of my life, one of two families has had the top job, and I think a change will do you good.

Now don't worry, I'm not gonna try to change your mind and I won't be changing mine, but, I just couldn't talk about my fear of caucuses without talking about who I like and how it will get me over going to the damn thing.

*gets off soapbox*

Slipping backwards

Friday, 1 February 2008

Today's follow up apt. was not the "yay its all better" I was hoping for. Instead we got more weight loss (very close to where she was at her 6 mo), even lower hemoglobin, and a follow up again in month.

She's going to go on iron drops, which should back her up to last week. And we really need to try to get her weight up. The weight thing I am hoping is the result of dismal eating over the weekend and missed feeding on Monday. She eats as often and as much as she wants, and has been slowly working back up to pre-sick levels, but still hasn't really been there. It seriously doesn't help that she is now very distractable while eating. (ooo, look, daddy, I like him, I can say his name)

In any case, its just more stress I don't need on top of work stress. I'm having doubts about being a working mom I didn't expect and I can't afford. This post is going nowhere good, I'm stopping now.

Cousins...

Monday, 28 January 2008

Apparently, I'm about 50 pounds lighter in my own head than I actually am. I continue with the plan to lose those 50 pounds. 5 down, 50 to go.

Better for it.

So things here seem to have started getting a bit better. She's still not eating great, but some lactobacillius and forcing a few yogurt coated cheri0's in her seems to have calmed some tummy discomfort.

We think the not eating has been caused by the fact that we go after her face with something not nice at least 50% of the time. Tylenol, antibiotics, nebs, syringes of probiotics and breast milk (if I can't get her to bf directly, a bottle is even worse). Combine that with stomach discomfort, and you get pretty much nothing but bad associations.

We think we hit a turning point last night, and something else started happening Saturday that we think also helped. The Sprout, who has always been a football nurser, now prefers to nurse cross cradle. We think its so she can lay with her legs out flat. Its totally weirding me out, because I really thought that we would nurse football forever. It was easier to see her and latch her when she was little, especially since with my larger tummy cradle is harder to pull off. Either way, I can get her to nurse like a champ, though it has taken some convincing a couple of the times. We'll see how daycare and bottles goes today.

If that goes well, and her fever stays away, I think we may actually have a chance of beating this thing. Which is better than I've felt about it for like two weeks now.

Next task, get that iron up. We're having something involving beans tonight, I think.

Update: Not a UTI. So then, what was it. Waiting on call from the Dr.

Update 2: Stop the Antibiotics. Then start the iron vitamin drops after her tummy gets better. We'll see... I have little faith her fever will stay down.

Saturday, 26 January 2008

Yeah, the meat suggestion perplexes me, as someone named after a leafy green especially. She did say vitamins after the antibiotics. Basically, right now, her tummy is too messed with to mess with more.

I read labels. A mini vat o' pureed green beans has more iron than a jar o' meat and veggies. Basically she'll start eating dinner with us. If what we're eating is OK for her, we run it through the grinder and see if she'll eat it. Otherwise, I'm going to try to give her more green beans. She loves 'em.

A Super Targe' that I normally go to has the lactobacillios. I've gotta go there today anyways, so I'm picking some up.

Catheterizing isn't bad really. We had it done one other time at the Children's ER when she was puking. Apparently that is also a sign of a UTI. After it happened my mom was a bit nervous, because a bad catheterizing is well... bad. Little one, little parts, you get the idea. If it has to be done, best it be done by someone who regularly does pediatric ones.

The visit

Friday, 25 January 2008

So....

The appointment went well. Our Dr. walked in, took a look at her, asked what was up, and told us this would not be a well baby visit. We pay no matter what, so not a big deal.

She went through what was charted, what we said, and listened to our frustration about no one seeming to take it totally seriously. Basically, we finally passed the point where she should be getting over it if it was just basic virus, and yes, there is something up.

She heard the wheeze, and saw that while she was in a good mood and not currently sporting a raised temp, she was very much not herself. (finally someone other than us notices)

They did a CBC (blood work), checked her o2 levels, did a flu check (even with the vaccine, some kids are getting it), catheterized her (screen for UTI), and gave her a neb (we skipped that in the morning so they could see/hear her in all her glory).

Flu was negative (whew)

The neb took care of the wheeze, we continue those, and no chest x-ray. Her o2 levels were also normal, so that's good.

UTI - she had just peed (stinker), and only gave them enough for culture. We will know for sure on Monday, however, there were white cells in her urine, so they're pretty sure she has one, most likely already in her kidneys.

Now the fun part. CBC. Platelets up, sign of her fighting something. White cell count, higher, but not super high, again, she's fighting a bug. Hemoglobin... down. A sign of fighting something, but low enough that they're concerned about her iron intake. They suggested meat, and antibiotics, and vitamins when done with antibiotics.

Now... about the meat. She isn't really eating solids much. We're lucky if we get a couple of T in her of anything. We were still on once a day because of fears about puking. She wants to self feed, but especially with all of the phlegm, isn't really doing well on not gagging. Not to mention, I was planning on no meat until she was a year. So... how do you do meat with that?

I did try some for lunch, it got a resounding heck no. I will keep trying, and she did eat dinner with us tonight. We finally used the baby food grinder and ground up chicken and spinach, but mostly she thought it was fun to play with. I guess we just keep trying to feed her solids, give her Cheri0's, and puffs, and make sure she gets enough milk. That's the other thing, her appetite is still hit or miss for breast milk. I know it doesn't effect iron in my milk, but I started a supplement, just in case.

The other thing is after the nasty reaction to the antibiotics last time, we tried another one, and she's been prescribed lactobacillios for her tummy. I can't find a store that has it that is close to my house but that's North for you.

All in all, we're feeling better, she seems to be better, though I know nothing could have kicked in yet, but who cares, she seems much more like herself.

Oh, almost forgot, she's 30.5 inches long (95%), but only 19 pounds 14 ounces 50th %). She's lost about a pound, maybe a little more, since this all started. Even more reason to start trying to feed her more.

Medical/Mom advice

Thursday, 24 January 2008

Ok, after over two weeks of missed work, fevers, antibiotics with bad reactions, ear infections, nebulizers, I need some advice, and place to gather my thoughts before our Dr. Apt. tomorrow.

Here is the history:

Wed the 9th - Pick the kid up from daycare, she has a fever. Lucky daycare didn't notice, its pretty high. 102.6 - She's been coughing from

Thursday - Still high, keep her home from daycare, give tylenol to get it down a bit.

Friday - Still high, but not all day, maybe tylenol keeping it down, may not be.

Saturday - Still high - bring her in to Dr. since she's acting like she's getting an ear infection. NP listens to her lungs A LOT, but doesn't say anything. Ears are OK. Says if she still has a fever on Monday, bring her back.

Sunday - Still high

Monday - Still high. Get in to Dr right away. Lungs sound wheezy, neb gets rid of that, get sent home with neb. Eyes are oozing green puss. BIG ear infection. Get antibiotics. See a Dr this time, who seems more on top of it.

Tuesday - Back to daycare, fever seems to come and go, but it lower. Figure its last of ear infection, or teething.

Wednesday - Starts getting diarrhea. Also comes home from daycare wheezing, call Dr, talk to nurse, she sends note to daycare to neb at daycare.

Thursday-Sunday - More/worse diarrhea, still intermittent fever. Appetite slowing.

Monday the 21st - Start getting worried about her poor chapped butt, and waning appetite. Call Dr, talk to Nurse, she says bring her in. Bring her in, see a different NP. Checks ears, they're OK, says stop antibiotics and see if that clears up butt issues. Says fever is teething or end of cold, but since its been lower, not a big deal.

Tuesday - Fever up close to 103 (102.9) ajd stays home. Goes between higher fever, and OK with tylenol. Try to let it run up between doses to do its job.

Wednesday - I stay home fever is still high, 6 hours after tylenol dose, seems to have gone away. 12 hours after tylenol dose, its back up.

Thursday - Send her into daycare. Fever is lower, but not close to normal. Med her up on Tylenol, tell daycare to keep it coming. Need to hold out a day for Dr. visit on Friday AM for 9 mo apt.

So... here is the question. I doubt the fever will clear today. She's snotty again, and generally not happy. (though at every Dr. Apt she was miss happy pants) Tomorrow, do I start getting more demanding that they test more to see WTF is going on? At the rate this is going, with missing work, my job could be in danger. Fevers aren't supposed to last for weeks on end, right?

It was a singer/songwriter thing...

... with sweet vocals and a mandolin.

W. E. P. Duncan - make two people happy.

After a bad argument, and an episode of Unplugged where I realized I sounded better just singing and playing the hammer dulcimer while my sister pouted in the balcony, I went solo, but still had a name.

The Man They Could Not Hang - pretend there's no difference

I gave it all up to become a mom and give up touring.

I love Ms. Huis's Meme's.

I admit, I was going to start this at work, and my wiki was for a terrorist in GitMo, so I stopped and didn't do it. I really didn't want to end up with men in suits knocking on my door for a thing on my blog.

Snap on Onesie Extenders

Friday, 18 January 2008

Ok, question about them.

Right now some of her onesies ride up above the waist of her pants. I have to tuck in the tops of the leg holes. Her pants tend to ride lower on her waist because they end up being smaller to accomodate her skinny butt (jealous)

Wouldn't the extenders just exacerbate where my problem is? The more she moves, the less I can get away with pants that don't fit in the waist anyways. The other thing is sleave length. Not an issue with the Carters ones, but everyone else seems to not understand my monkey child.

I realize now why my mother dressed me in overalls for so long. They solve a good many of my what to wear issues. (even if they do make her butt look big)

Them there milestone things.

Thanks for the support on the whole Neb thing. We've had to up her doses and so we went through the hassle of having daycare administer the stuff. She sounds worse, but I think that may be more of it just working itself out.

She's now 9 months old, still as big as ever (get the official measurements next week when she has her 9 mo apt and a follow up for her current illness). She's long and tall and not all that chubby, and clothing is still a challenge.

Because I hate how those nice developmental emails keep pointing out to me what she isn't doing, and since everyone else's kid can already do it, I'm going to vent a little.

She is not crawling. She is not rocking. She is not eating table food (Cheri0's don't count) She eats solids once a day because we're not sure if more won't make her puke. Not to mention, when we're home, she's often asleep due to lack of napping at daycare/being sick. She looks like an older kid, and is regularly offered the kids menu at restaurants. She still thinks that nipples have covers. She's teething again and had it not been for the nipple shield, I would have been bleeding after this morning's incident. I am still breastfeeding. I plan on breastfeeding past a year. I'm still cosleeping. I plan on stopping that as soon as I can convince ajd to start work on moving the rooms again.

She does babble a lot, Da, Ga, La, but not Ma. She will give you a toy if you ask her for it and put out your hand. Her pincer grasp is getting good (see above and the Cheri0's) and she's eating puffs now. She has an amazing reach, I think if she were shorter maybe she'd have more reasons to crawl. She will sit next to you on the couch and snuggle. She's a ham and loves to make people laugh. (see next item) She plays peek-a-boo, as in lifts the blanket up and hides her face, then drops it down and expects you to react. She claps. The best thing, she does my silly happy dance/snoopy dance thing while sitting. ajd swears I've doomed her to a life of bad white girl dancing. I don't care. I can put bows in her hair.

Yeah, we're still here...

So, its been a busy week. The sprout got really sick last week, work has been nuts for both of us, and the Sprout is still sick.

We went to the Dr. this morning after 6 days with a fever (went in Saturday, no ear infection yet, but lots of lung listening, and a "if she still has a fever on Monday, come back), and after more listening to her lungs and looking in one ear (clear) and the other ear (wow, lots of puss in there), she got antibiotics and a nebulizer. Yes, a nebulizer. Like standard home fare for people who smoked for 50 years or with serious asthma (not even ajd has one). She was fine with it.. for like five minutes. Now it is the devil.

So.. 50 bucks in copays later, and hopefully fever free enough to go to daycare tomorrow, the Sprout is still sick. I'm sick too.

Work is still crazy. I have all kinds of things I want to blog about, and an email of stuff to send to The Sexy Blonde, but for now, I just want some decent sleep. That may take a few years.

Ummm... should I worry?

Sunday, 6 January 2008

Internets,

I can't find anything in google that leads me one way or the other but... One of Sprout's feet is noticeably larger than the other. Like maybe 1/8 to 1/4 in longer, and it seems more... chubby than the other. Just an uneven growth spurt, or should I be moving up her 9 mo. apt?

Your in total neuroses,
