Oh yeah, tubes - Updated

Wednesday, 30 April 2008

akj reminded me y'all need an update.

She has fluid, again.

Her hearing is borderline normal, the ear with fluid is obviously worse. Sitting there, with her on my lap, knowing she isn't hearing what I hear was really hard. Made me want to pinch her thigh or something.

Given the hearing, and the infections requiring massive amounts of antibiotics, there is no question she is having surgery. I am not so patiently waiting to hear from the scheduler about when. Update: Surgery next Friday, the 9th. So happy we don't have to wait too long.

We'll be doing it a CHC, so everyone she deals with will be used to dealing with children, which makes me feel so much better than doing it at a primarily adult hospital.

Wow, that moved quickly

I would be curious to know what eventually comes of this. I realize that in part they are responding to the major press recently, but what took so long. Not to mention, if the FDA did brush something under the rug because of industry pressure, and the Sprout goes through puberty early, who pays? (I mean who makes it up to me that she gets moody and teenagerish early)

And here's the even better question. Given all this, why are some people still using the crap? I got away from it as soon as a could, but the directory at my daycare, who is pregnant, is actually still considering using her old scratched up Avent bottles.

Misc Items

1. pointless - walking on pretty lakeside nature path - and smoking.

2. Bad - employees of large baby/kid store chain (you know, the BRU one) smoking right outside of entrance. In air space of patrons and in sight of children visiting store with kids. Only thing worse would have been if it had been at parent store, TRU.
3. it could be worse - Our version of CIO (the check every five minutes, lay down, shush, rub head/back version) Only thing holding me together is chocolate ice cream. Note to self, get to store before tomorrow night.
4. It gets better, right? - Last night, hour and a half, tonight, hour and a half.
5. When you're tired, you're tired - Tonight, fell asleep, sitting up, in the corner of her crib, head facing into corning leaning into corner. Checked on her a little later than maybe I should have, after she fell asleep, and was able to move her without waking.
6. Hopeful - ENT appointment is tomorrow morning. Hoping that they agree that surgery is better than antibiotics resistance.

Toys and teeth... all kinds of freaking teeth.

The ENT appointment cannot come fast enough.  I feel like I need a giant ear voodoo doll to try and keep her from getting another one before then.  100 bucks in copays, and we still have made it to the appointment, or her 1 year checkup.  Thank god for my flex account, so much for the down payment on lasic this year...

To add the joy... we are getting in, if the matched sets (right left, not even talking up down) come in around the same time, six to eight teeth all at once.  We have top and bottom back (that's right, molars) right, and left just front of center, already through the gums.  And there is more on the way.... Gotta chew all of the meat right?

The toy part has nothing to do with the Sprout.  The weekend of her birthday, my present showed up.  Mother's day, birthday, flag day, all in one.  Ajd got me a fruity computer.  My old one was around 8 years old, and had already had everything upgradable upgraded.  It was time, and I decided to make the switch.  I deal enough with micro.sqaush at work, and I knew I had good support from Dude and akj.  Not to mention, I have no need... well, time, to play games anymore.  It also has fun stuff like a dvd burner, moving making software, and it plays so nice with the rest of my toys... Mmm... fruit...

Last Night

Wednesday, 16 April 2008

Last night, the Sprout screamed for what seemed like forever (including so bad she was coughing), woke up the moment I left the room, and still ended up sleeping with us, because the night before....

She woke up in the middle of the night and though perhaps she would go get herslef a glass of water... or something. Either way, she crawled off the bed (no damage done, except maybe to my sleep)

ajd and I are both sick, which does not make this an ideal time to do this, but it needs to be done, even if we are doing it late. Our fear is that it won't ever happen. So what do you do? How long do you let her cry? We can get her back to sleep, but she doesn't stay that way. She seems heart broken about the whole thing. In fact, this morning, I caught her trying to put a Nuk in a couple of stuffed animals mouths. Stuffed animals in her crib. Like she's trying to say, "so they leave you alone too? You poor thing, have something to suck on to make it better"

I need strength, I need advice, I need to know I won't be permanently be damaging her ability to trust.

One

Dear Sprout,

You're one. When did that happen?

I know you're on your way to starting school, dating, junior high, high school, college and maybe kids some day, but would you please slow down? I mean seriously, I can't keep up with the crawling, the opening cupboards, the climbing stairs (thanks mom), the talking?!?

I know I can't stop it, and I'm trying to enjoy it. It helps that you're so darn cute, so easy to deal with, even when you figured out how to shake your head no. At least I can still hang you by your toes until you giggle.

So anyways, happy Birthday kiddo. But lets slow down a bit before the next one.

So, some updates....

-For Sprout's first birthday, she got a doozy of a double ear infection. We were talked out of tubes before because it was almost spring. We are not letting that happen again.
- With the ear infection came something we had started to notice last time, but this time was disconcertingly pronounced. Hearing loss, almost complete hearing loss, and backsliding on language development. We noticed it a week ago Sunday, made an appointment for Wed with a Dr. we liked, and then fretted until then. Happily it has cleared up with the two (2!) shots of antibiotics. We have another follow up this Wednesday. The good news is that since her ears started clearing up, she seems to be hearing fine, and language is coming back. We even have some new things, like Mama, N's, and this morning, Down (which beats trying to hurl herself out of my lap)
- Found at the first ear infection apt last week, she's getting in molars.
- I didn't kill anyone at her birthday party, but I did find a side effect of mn passive aggressive. If you say the party should end "soon" meaning maybe in the next hour, everyone stands up and leaves. Unfortunately, this also gets rid of relatives you're enjoying seeing.
- There is great joy in realizing your kid didn't get a single electronic toy for their birthday.
- I love chubby little baby cheeks. I'm going to remind her how cute they were at every embarrassing moment I can.

Sprung

Friday, 4 April 2008

Its spring, the Sprout is almost 1, and my world is changing ways I wasn't entirely prepared for.

I had really gotten used to the things the Sprout was doing. I could meet her needs, and while I wanted to make sure that she kept up with her developmental milestones, I wasn't in any hurry for her to stop being my little baby.

Man I was in for a rude awakening. In the matter of a month she started crawling, giving up baby food, and nursing less. She also grew four more teeth, is actually biting things (fortunately none of them human or canine yet), and has started to really look like walking is going to happen sooner rather than later.

I wasn't ready for this! Soon, she's going to talk. She points to things, she tries to say things. I had the baby thing down, what do I do now? She's going to talk back to me, she's going to say no. Bedtime is going to become an even worse struggle (and right now, its bad) She's going to grow hair, and its already starting to curl. I'm going to have to brush it, and she's going to hate me for that. My baby is going to start school, become a teenager, and go to college... wah!

But hey, at least its spring. The buds are on the trees, and last night, we went for a walk.

(special thanks to Syl for the backpack. This is at least the third or fourth time we've used it)
