Has anyone done a farm share? I keep thinking that buying local is really a good idea, and its an easy way to do organic. Its obviously too late for this year, but it would allow planning for next year. However, there are still only two adults in our house, and it might be easier to try and split with someone near by or who works near one of us. (Pusher? AKJ?) There seem to be a number that deliver, which would take care of any concerns about having to drive to the country to get it.
Along the same lines, we were thinking about buying part of a cow. I've found a number that do around 30 pounds in the 5/lb range, but if someone was interested in splitting a quarter/half of a cow, then it would be less. Mmmm... Beef?
The sprout turns six months old today. Holy cow. (She's going to be a cow for Halloween) We tried solids a month or so ago when it looked like I would be going out of town. She got all gassy/fussy, and my trip was postponed, so we delayed. Lots of reasons to delay, very few to start early. Did anyone do baby led solids? It seems to be the hot thing to do in the wholistic family world. We are going to try solids again, this time a whole grain variety, but I was thinking we could see how she does with feeding herself some mashed banana or avocado (my first food). She tried to eat my oatmeal the other day, I think we're getting closer to ready. She also has been having fun with a spoon while I eat, keeps her from trying to to steal the pork chops.
We thought we would have a weekend off to work on stuff around the house, but we're off to Red Wing to see out of town family that came to visit. I get to try out my new nursing tops. (exposing skin in winter in MN bad) I'm sure I'll still get stuck in another room, but at least my tummy won't be cold. So my last question is this, why can't everyone get over it, they're just tits. Everyone's got them, some are just bigger than others. I wish I lived in Europe some times, they put them in the newspaper there. Since I started nursing, I have a hard time thinking about them as anything but someone's lunch. I totally see what other people can be nervous about, but why can't people just let it be. And what's with Bill Maher. He used to be so cool.

You know, I usually throw a light blanket over my baby & that side. I found that they're not TOO bad about waving their arms & throwing it off on purpose or not if you do it that way fairly often. Seemed like everybody was more comfortable then. Now with the 2nd I'm more blase about it, but when I started with Pumpkin, I wouldn't be in the room with anybody but Mr. Kluges or my mom. Guess that changed! :)
I think it would be easier for me if she didn't still insist on the nipple shield. The other thing is that I never have been able to get her to nurse well in cradle/cross cradle hold. My big tummy gets in the way. I really hope the nursing wear works.
Yeah, I've looked at the farm co-op thing, but um...I don't eat enough vegetables to make it worthwhile.
We did bananas first (mashed and with a little water) then rice quickly followed by oats because she hated the rice. Avacado was pretty early too, but she was not all that impressed with it. (though she loves guacamole now...)
The whole move to solids was so confusing for me- I would have been happy to nurse her until she could have a sandwich, it was so much easier!
We moved to solids early, but Meimei couldn't seem to keep anything in her mouth, so we also waited until 6 months or so. Then it was rice, etc. Kitten loved avacado, I wish I had given it to her more. I just spooned it right out of the skin.
Oh, and my dad buys half of a cow every year. As long as you have a freezer, it's a great way to do it. Plus, we get their leftovers when its time to get a new cow!
Crap! I forgot to ask you, Did you make it to the orchard? Any pumpkin pics?
I started Cordy right at 4 months on solids, because she was eating the maximum recommended amount of formula per day.
This time, I'm not in such a hurry, but Mira is. She's four months, but loves to watch me eat, and has lunged for my sandwich once. So I think we'll be starting solids in a week or two.
I recommend skipping rice cereal entirely. Cordy hated it, it made her gassy, and it tasted like paste. Oatmeal was a much better first food - at least it had a little flavor, and later we mixed it with fruits.
