Nesting

Tuesday, 3 April 2007

I think I'm nesting. Either that or I am pretending to nest in the hopes that it makes the Sprout show up soon. Part of it is that since I am flirting with health issues, and every time I get close to an appointment I worry that I will be off to the hospital and we won't have anything done. I feel very confident that I have enough clothing to keep Sprout good for the beginning, and even a little past that. The cold weather has made me a little nervous about if its all warm enough, but thats what they made blankets for. I picked up silly little things like wipes, a Boppy, and socks. Don't know why, but socks. I also got a few personal care items for me. I'm one load of laundry away from having both my bag and the Sprout's bag packed. We need to install the car seat. Worst case, I've got things together enough that if I go in, I could direct a friend on what to do to get everything together. Here's to a good appointment, and at least a few more days to get everything else done.

Frankie says RELAX!

In Sprout related news this week, I have high blood pressure. So far any test they've given me for preeclampsia has come back negative (there's still a 24 type thing I need to deal with on Sunday...), but my blood pressure has been high at my recent appointments. (ever since the fall thing, actually) I think the reason its high is because I'm continuously worried about being put on bed rest because of my high blood pressure. The statistics would say it was being overweight before I got pregnant. No matter what is causing it, its annoying. Especially because I'm suposed to reduce the amount of stress in my life. HA! As if having a baby wasn't stressful enough, my manager quit (the most wonderful manager I've ever had). No more working mom to report to. I'll now be reporting to a guy. A very nice understanding one, but it still makes me nervous. Not to mention, they'll most likely replace her while I'm gone. So it will be like coming back to a new job. Ok, remember to take deep breaths, relax...

Bitchy part done. I had my first baby shower at work on Thursday. I've attended a number of the work baby showers, but it was still suprising how fun it all was. I don't think I'd ever actually been to a shower of any variety before I started this job. My friends when I was younger didn't get married when I was younger, and the friends I made later were already married. I didn't have one for my Vegas wedding, because well, Vegas wedding. It was fun, cute, and I feel like I've had a warm up for the family one to come. No to mention, the chocolate cake with chocolate frosting was NUMMY!

Baby steps

Sunday, 18 March 2007

Yay. We have a decorating plan. I finally got ajd involved, and we have something. I made a sushi quilt last year, before I got pregnant, and we're going with sushi. Traditional, no. But when have I ever been traditional. Its greens, yellows, orange, and some brown. Its very fun. Here is one of the fabrics. I also had more fun shopping than I should have. I went to the outlet mall, and practiced restraint. I ended up with some amazingly cute stuff. There is an entire store that seemed to have an endless selection of things with frogs on them. Little Me Umm... yay! And I also found the ellusive going home outfit. Its going to make some amazingly fun pictures. There will be no doubt that its my kid.

Here is the current list of things that are done:

Baby room theme decided on, and crib neccesities purchased (sheets, crib skirt) Fabric purchased for valances and accessories.

Enough basic baby clothes on hand to get through no matter what the showers bring

Baby detergent purchased and waiting to wash said clothes

Plane ticket for room help purchased. She'll be here in just over a week.

Whats left:

Make a list of things for Mom to work on

Clean out room and prep for painting

Purchase the rest of the furniture

Wash baby clothes

Paint and setup room

Pack our bags

Oh yeah... pick a name.

Its not a baby, its a BABY.

Yesterday - Dr. says, "You're measuring a little big. I think we should have that checked out."

So I schedule an appointment for today to have an ultrasound. Make sure everything's cool, n' such.

Today - Ultrasound tech says, "Ok, so a normal baby at 32 + 3 is just under four pounds. Your measurements put your baby at around 5 pounds 9 ounces or so. "

Jaw dropping, legs crossing, and signifigant effort made to not curse in front of the ultrasound tech. Keep in mind, I am just under 5 weeks away from being officially full term. (37 weeks) Just under 8 weeks away from a full 40 weeks (normal gestation), and this baby is already larger than I was when I was born. I was a little early, but not this early.

I ask the questions. Ok, what next, what does that mean. It means that I get to talk to my Dr., and that it will be watched, because the concern is, and I really am quoting, "the best way to get her out".

It means I was wise to not buy a thing in size "newborn". It means that I really will be getting that epidural now. There will be no thinking that maybe I can do it natural. Give me the damn drugs, because it isn't a baby, its a BABY.

Oh, and I finally gave in and checked out a political site. I like Al Franken.

Things I will never do, but ...

I think people who do are totally cool and impressive.

This is a kid I hung out with growing up. More later, this was just too cool.

Butt Ruffle

Saturday, 3 March 2007

My ultra feminist mother did her job well. Raised to poo-poo gender stereo types, I do the plumbing in the house, used the miter saw, and hate pink. So much have I been raised to hate all things traditionally feminine that I have been doing all that I can to find the perfect going home outfit for Sprout that isn't pink. Today I finally caved to the shopping bug and branched out beyond online to actual stores. I spent what was I beleive well over half an hour in the newborn section of Babies-r-Us searching everywhere for a cute, soft, non pink, hopefully non pastel outfit for Sprout. Going over things twice to make sure I didn't miss anything. Getting increasingly frustrated by the fact that while boy stuff comes in nice rich blues and greens, girl stuff comes in pink, maybe purple, and sometimes yellow or green with pink. They had one thing with frogs and pink (which wouldn't have been completely horrible), but it was for a premie, and after Thursdays fall, I didn't think I should tempt fate and get it just because it was cute.
As I got more frustrated, the oddest thing happened... I started really liking the pink. I think it was the butt ruffles. I realize they're a girly thing, but I like how it sounds. Butt ruffle, butt ruffle, butt ruffle...
I really don't know how it happened, but I almost walked out of the store with a large variety of pink things. Maybe it was something in the air. I managed to resist, and just get something cute and purple that says something about daddy (awww). And the world's softest pair of baby socks, which I am sure will never stay on her feet, and will end up being a dog toy.
I did realize something though, maybe I don't hate pink so much, just the idea of pink. A color that is expressly suposed to be girly. Even beyond the world of newborn attire, its girly. There may be a few men out there who own a pink hued dress shirt, but those men tend to be girly metro sexuals, or ones that think because it cost over 100 the color doesn't matter. Boys don't have anything like that. Blue is a universal color, or else we wouldn't have our great American love affair with our jeans. Green as well is everywhere. When my mom was working so hard to tear down gender stereotypes with me, did she dress my brother in pastels... No. She dressed him in primary colors. Not always easy for any infant, but far easier for a boy. Colored onsies for girls come in shades of light pink and white. For boys they come in white to navy. I found one multi color pack for girls with a darker purple, but that was one, out of many.
The end result, I'm rebelling by dressing my daughter in pink. Not exclusively pink, but there will be pink. Among other things, the risk of telling everyone you're having a girl means that you will get lots of pink. I'll stop fighting it, and give in to the pink. Especially knowing that people who really know me, know I'm a non traditional type of girl. The kind that thinks black on babies is uber cool. (especially when it looks like this: http://www.blacksheepbaby.com) They'll branch out from the pink so Sprout will have variety in her life.

I do believe I'm getting closer to have the outfit for going home figured out. Still can't explain why I'm obsessed.

I found a yellow with pink printed stuff on it coverall thingy. No mitten hands, but you can't have everything.

A green and pink flowered romper thingy, but I would need to get socks and such for it. Maybe for a party later or something.

And, kid you not, a blue and white floral, with ruffles, so I know its "girl" body suit. Again, no on the mitten hands. Oh well.
